Understanding Ideal Weight
Ideal body weight (IBW) was originally developed for medical dosage calculations. Today, these formulas help provide general guidelines, but they don't account for muscle mass, body fat percentage, or individual variations.
The Four Formulas
- Robinson (1983): Male: 52kg + 1.9kg/inch over 5ft | Female: 49kg + 1.7kg/inch over 5ft
- Miller (1983): Male: 56.2kg + 1.41kg/inch over 5ft | Female: 53.1kg + 1.36kg/inch over 5ft
- Devine (1974): Male: 50kg + 2.3kg/inch over 5ft | Female: 45.5kg + 2.3kg/inch over 5ft
- Hamwi (1964): Male: 48kg + 2.7kg/inch over 5ft | Female: 45.5kg + 2.2kg/inch over 5ft
